Your office desk is the most prominent part of your office. The fact is it says almost as much about you and your business as your mode of dress or whatever certificates you have on the wall. A serious desk would be a big wooden monstrosity with eagles engraved on it and legs carved to look like eagles claws, while a silly desk might convert into a massage table. Somewhere in the middle is probably the kind of desk you’re looking for. We’re going to help you find it.
First off what kind of business are you in? Think about what sort of desk your contemporaries have. Are they the serious sort? Are there any special functions needed, such as ease of filing? In other words, do you normally have a lot of paper floating around that you’ll often need access to? If so, start thinking drawers, if not then we’re still in the clear.
Now you have to figure out what your personal style is like. What kind of message do you want your desk to give for you? This is your chance to make a first office desk impression, so don’t blow it. You know what you need as far as modality goes, now is your chance to show them who you really are. Are you a warm grandfatherly, Mark Twain type or a Spartan in a three piece? You decide.
You might want to have a look around your office, because unless you are doing an office remodel (cha-ching) you’ll want your new desk to match. Take a mental picture of your surroundings and measure how much space you’ll have available for your new desk. The last thing you need is for your new desk to not fit!
You now know what you want so the next step is where to get it. A strong suggestion would be to be to do some comparative shopping. You can find great deals online, but there’s nothing like feeling the wood its self. You could always do both and compare the prices of the desks and the costs of delivery and set up.
Now it’s time that you get the chair. Not that chair, a new desk chair for your new office desk. Look for comfort and fashion, but keep in mind that the arms have to fit under the desk. Believe it or not, people forget how tall their desk is, or isn’t. If you buy a super adjustable type of chair, this won’t be a problem, but if you’re going for the “old money” look, you’d better figure out if it’s going to fit before you get it home.
What’s on top of your desk is important as well. You’ll be stuck with a black or gray monitor most likely, but you can still spruce up the top of your desk a little without much effort. Avoid anything too gaudy, such a brass flamingo, but try to show a little of yourself in your desk dcor. Believe it or not, people are more at ease with you if they think you have a hobby you’re passionate about, even if it’s not a hobby they share.
Hopefully, you’ve thought these things over a bit and are ready to go get your dream office desk. A desk is like your home away from home. Or if you work at home, it’s your away from home in your home, or something like that. At any rate, enjoy your desk!
