Modern writing desks are often designed with the intention of being used with a computer, printer, or other modern day office equipment. Often it feels like that the modern writing desk is really nothing more than a normal piece of office desk or a computer stand or cart. However, you can create your own modern writing desk that is not the typical computer desk that you see today.
There are some fantastic desk models available that aren’t made from the same materials that you will find from any local hardware discount store. There are modern writing desks made of stainless steel or with thick heavy glass. These models tend to be more eye-catching and unique than many of the run of the mill wood panel designs that are common today.
These desks are usually available in specialty furniture stores that create unique styles of furnishings for those who are interested in something out of the ordinary, though many ordinary office furniture stores often have similar models, too.
If you don’t like any of the designs you find, it is possible for a good handyman to create something on their own. Some do-it-yourself individuals have been creative in how they made their own modern writing desks. While more common modern writing desk designs will usually appear like normal office desks, some artists can get very creative.
For example, the steel taken from a classic automobile would certainly make a fine looking and unusual modern writing desk. The hood of an old classic muscle car would certainly catch a lot of attention in your office and set you apart from others.
Certain creative people like this don’t buy that all modern writing desks had to be boring wood finish pieces of furniture made from plastic and plywood. To them, going a little bit beyond the ordinary and embracing the creative can result in a modern writing desk
If you want to have one of these unusual and stunningly original modern writing desks in your home, you might need to do it yourself or find a more capable furniture builder who shares your vision. There is no need to have the same old computer desk that everyone else has in their home or office.
A little bit of imagination can help set you apart by creating a truly great modern design that is distinctly you. All it really takes is a little imagination and some furniture building skills (or skilled help) to get the modern writing desk of your dreams.

Perhaps the most exquisite and technically refined piece from German cabinetmaker Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793), this desk was made for his premier patron, the Catholic official Johann Philipp von Walderdorff. Its interior holds a multitude of drawers, panels, and compartments, in addition to sophisticated mechanical fittings that safeguard the elector’s privacy.
